What's in a Lesson?

Every lesson follows a consistent, research-backed structure so teachers can teach with confidence and students know what to expect. From original songs and movement videos to interactive games, printables, and built-in assessments.

K-5 Lesson Structure
Welcome and Engage
Lessons begin by capturing students’ attention and setting the tone for learning. Teachers introduce the essential question and key vocabulary, sparking curiosity and preparing students to think critically about the lesson’s focus.
Prior Knowledge
Students connect new learning to what they already know through quick reviews, discussion prompts, or movement activities. This ensures concepts are grounded in familiar experiences.
Direct Instruction
Teachers introduce new material using interactive QuaverMusic screens, multimedia, and clear explanations. Musical concepts are explicitly taught with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic support.
Practice and Application
Students and teachers work together to apply new skills. This may include clapping rhythms, singing patterns, echo responses, or interactive activities where scaffolding and feedback are provided. Activities extend learning by having students demonstrate skills individually, in small groups, or as an ensemble.
Review and Close
Students reinforce their understanding through practice and performance opportunities. Activities extend learning by having students demonstrate skills individually, in small groups, or as an ensemble.
Extension Activities
Students deepen and extend their learning through creative, cross-curricular, or independent activities. These may include composition projects, improvisation, research connections, performance challenges, or at-home practice opportunities that encourage student choice, creativity, and continued musical growth beyond the core lesson.
Reflect and Assess
Lessons conclude with opportunities for students to summarize learning, revisit the essential question, and demonstrate understanding. Teachers can use observational checklists, quick checks for understanding, or embedded assessments to track progress.
