Set Smart Goals for 2020

Each week on the QuaverSEL Blog, we highlight one of the core CASEL competencies and a sub-competency. Today, we’re diving in to self-managementand an activity that will help students practice setting goals and how to achieve them.

Let’s dig in!

As we head into a new year (and a new decade!), the new year is a perfect time to practice an important self-management skill with students: goal-setting.

In SELMusic, you’ll find an engaging original song called “Working On My Dreams.”

This song focuses on setting goals and how students can work hard to accomplish them in 2020 and beyond.

Play through the song a few times to familiarize students with the lyrics and the theme of the song.

After listening to the song a few times, ask students, “Is there a goal that you want to achieve in 2020?”

This discussion question is a great way to lead into the next activity.

Found in the Song Hub for “Working On My Dreams,” select “Setting Goals This Year” from the Song Activities menu.

The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to set goals for the year. Click the PLAY button under the first character, listen to what she says and ask students the following clarification questions: What is her goal?

My goal this year is to read 50 books.

Think back to the song: How is she going to reach her goal?

To work towards my goal, I will start reading every day.

After listening to each of the character’s goals, it’s time for students to set their own goals.

Click My Goal to see a sentence stem that will help students articulate what their goals are. Use the DRAW TOOL to have students write in their own goal and how they will work to achieve it this year.

Discuss how goals help us. Goals help us direct our energy, just like a flower reaches for the sun. Goals help us to grow smarter.

You might consider having students write down or illustrate their goals. Hang up students’ goals for 2020 around your classroom or keep them in a folder and revisit them at the end of the year, so students can see how far they have come!

How do you encourage goal-setting in your classroom?
