A Suggested Lesson Sequence for QuaverMusic’s Song of the Month

This song can be found in QuaverMusic’s Pre-K Lesson 28, and has so many musical and cross-curricular connections!

Long and Short Train Whistles

When used in a music lesson, Quaver’s Long and Short Train Whistles lesson slide (also in Pre-K Lesson 28) is a great way to help students visualize long and short sounds with iconic notation:

Ask your students these essential questions: What is the difference between long and short sounds? How do they sound? How can we write/visualize them?

Suggested Use of this Activity:

Click the yellow play buttons to hear brief train whistle sounds of different lengths, and vocalize what you hear. Gesture to students to echo you. Improvise a few vocal patterns of short and long sounds (simple quarter, eighth note rhythms)  and have students echo to illustrate how short and long sounds can be combined.

Next, click the orange arrow near the right to advance to the next page.

With your voice, demonstrate to students what each line of iconic symbols might sound like using a short or long train whistle sound. Click on each of the train whistles at the bottom of the slide, listen, and ask students to drag it to the empty square next to the correct row of symbols. 

Click the orange right-side arrow for some more challenging rhythms!

Trains, Trains, Trains

Then, on the Quaver resource Trains, Trains, Trains (also in PreK Lesson 28), learn all about different types of train cars and their role in helping the entire train stay on track!

Ask your students these essential questions: What makes a train car special? What makes me special? How do train cars work together as a team? What does it mean to work together on a team?

Next, return to the Home page and select Train Cars. Click the orange arrows to learn about the different types of train cars.

Train Cars Each Have a Special Role

Scroll through the various types of train cars to explore the differences between each. Discuss with students what each car’s special job is and what makes them unique.

Count/Tap The Train Cars

Next, return to the Home page and select Long and Short Trains. Click on each train car to count in succession. Assign various body percussion movements to various train cars and guide students to create and perform what they see.

Quick Tip: use the Metronome Widget (found in the MENU) to provide a steady beat to accompany student performances.

The lesson ideas shared here can be a launching point for you in your music instruction. Students can identify and visualize long and short sounds with iconic notation, while also learning the value of teamwork.
