How Do Changes Help Us Grow?

Each week on the QuaverSEL Blog, we highlight one of the QuaverSEL’s SEL Plus competencies. Today, we’re diving into one of QuaverSEL’s SEL Plus competencies, anxiety, and an activity that addresses how to navigate big and small changes.

Quaver’s SEL Plus competencies highlight important topics not addressed by CASEL.

Let’s dive in!

Sometimes changes can be small, difficult, sudden, or exciting. Think about a time you had to make a change. How did it make you feel? What are some things you learned because of it?

Take five minutes this week to address changes and how even though changes can be anxiety-inducing, changes can help us grow and become better.

Changes Around the Corner

You’ll find this song in the SELMusic Library by searching “Changes Around the Corner.” This song reinforces the theme that while change is inevitable, we can be brave, get through it, and come out stronger.

Your school may be out for a few weeks or for the rest of the year due to COVID-19. This song is a great way to reinforce that while things are changing quickly, we can be brave and know that things will feel normal again soon.

Learn how to assign this song to students at home.

After listening to the song a few times, head back to the Song Hub to discover several activities to use with the song.

Grow with Change

The purpose of this screen in to illustrate how we can grow from change! In this activity, students will watch a tree grow through the four seasons. Click the BLUE ARROW to paginate through the changing seasons: Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring.

  • As you progress to each season, the middle tree starts to feel anxious about the changes around.
  • In the Fall, as the leaves change color, the middle tree starts to feel worried. Why might the middle tree feel anxious or worried?
  • In the Winter, the middle tree is holding onto its’ leaves, even though the trees nearby have let go of their leaves. Why might the middle tree be afraid to let go of its leaves?
  • In the Spring, we notice that the trees that let go of their leaves were able to grow taller with brand new leaves.

Change might be difficult because we don’t know the outcome, but sometimes it helps us grow.

How is change helping you grow right now?
