A Strategy to Manage Strong Feelings

Each week on the QuaverSEL Blog, we highlight one of the core CASEL competencies and a sub-competency. Today, we’re diving into one of CASEL’s core competencies, self-awareness, and a song that focuses on managing strong feelings and how breathing can keep us feeling calm and in control.

You’ll find this song in the SELMusic Library by searching “Breathing Calms Me Down.” 

Your school may be out for a few weeks or for the rest of the year due to COVID-19. This song is a great way to reinforce strategies that students can use to deal with strong feelings at home. Breathing helps us to stay centered, stay calm, and avoid lashing out because of our strong feelings.

Learn how to assign this song to students at home.

Strong Feelings Sort

This screen is for students to look at a situation, identify, and understand the feelings that come from it. On the second screen, students will identify emotions to match each picture.

  • Click a face to reveal a scenario.
  • To create a continuous conversation, Toggle GAME MODE to ON. Students will have thirty seconds to discuss the questions and scenario on the screen. When thirty seconds have elapsed, the picture and questions will change.
  • Click the blue Paginating Arrow to navigate to a sorting activity.
  • Drag the corresponding feeling word to the picture. Click CHECK to reveal correct answers, or RESET to start over.

Your students may be experiencing many strong feelings for the very first time right now. When students can identify strong feelings, they can begin to incorporate strategies to manage them.
