Create a culture of caring in your classroom on November 13th and beyond!
World Kindness Day is November 13th!
How will you choose to spread kindness this November?
While we should strive to promote kindness every day, World Kindness Day allows us to stop and reflect on how we can make our school community a little more caring.
Today, we’ll highlight just a few of the resources from Quaver SEL that support a culture of caring in your classroom and beyond.
Let’s dive in!
Head to the SELMusic library and search “Kind Words” to find this encouraging song about the power of sharing kind words with our peers.
Remind students that kind words let us know that others care about us and that we are important to them. How might your kind words change someone’s day?
Encourage students to share some kind words with their classmates or loved ones.
Kindness Is My Jam
Back in the SELMusic library, select the activity “Kindness Is My Jam.”
In this activity, students will select the song titles that feature kind words for Jude to listen to, and see if the ones they chose are correct. Discuss what makes the song title kind. If it’s not, what words make it unkind?
Click the purple arrow to go to the next screen.
Here, you can compose a song as a class that incorporates kind words.
Use the EXAMPLE button to toggle an example song on and off.
Click the purple arrow again to go to the next screen.
This screen offers students an opportunity to practice saying kind words to others in their class.
If class is in-person this year, you may wish to keep students in their seats and talk to those around them. If you move around, remind students to stay socially distant.
If school is online this year, students might send their partner a message or share their kind words with the class over a video platform.
How to Be a Good Friend
You can find this activity in Resource Manager by searching “How to Be a Good Friend.”
In this activity, students will learn how to be a good friend.
Students will click the track button to hear and repeat the rap that Lucia or Carlos says.
Click each icon to reveal ways in which you can be a good and kind friend. Discuss with students how they might be a good friend today and every day. What actions can they take to exemplify being a good friend?
You can find this activity in Resource Manager by searching “Kind Minds.”
In this activity, students will listen to each scenario before acting out how they would express empathy and kindness in that situation.
You may wish to simply discuss the scenario and the appropriate reaction instead of acting it out, especially if you are in a distance teaching situation.
Get Caught Being Caring!
Create a bulletin board where teachers and students can submit names of individuals in the building they’ve noticed being caring towards others.
How will you celebrate World Kindness Day in your classroom? We hope that these activities and resources will help you and your students continue to spread kindness on November 13th and every day. It’s cool to be kind.
